Turn Over a New Leaf/Tarp Turnover

Type of Activity: Problem Solving

Props Needed: One Tarp

Set Up: Spread the tarp out onto the ground.  Instruct the group to stand on the tarp.

Process: With the entire group standing on the tarp, the objective is to turn the tarp completely over without touching the ground around the tarp.  For safety reasons, there is to be no stacking of people, i.e. everyone must have at least one foot on the tarp with their own weight being supported by that foot.

Variations: How many times the group can fold the tarp in half without touching the ground.

How many times the group can fold the tarp in half without losing contact with the tarp. Fold the tarp into a particular shape

The activity changes with your wording.  See if the group can figure out the differences.

Debriefing Topics:

  • How did your group decide hot to turn the tarp over?
  • Were all ideas listened to before you started?  Why or why not?
  • What were some feelings you experienced during this activity?
