Type of Activity: Energizer

Props Needed: Ricochet ball, From the book, Ricochet, by Chris Cavert

Set Up: Explain vocabulary and demonstrate each term for new ricochet players. If returners review so everyone is on same page. Need open space with large floor (concrete, wood floor, etc.) Does not work effectively on grass and long carpets.


  • Rocket--Throwing the ball as high as space is available.
  • A Short--The lowest throw allowed; about 10 feet.
  • Sky-Scraper--A throw that's in-between a Rocket and a Short.
  • Ricochet--When the ball angles drastically away from the potential catcher after a bounce.
  • Back Lash--When the ball angles drastically back towards the catcher after the first bounce.
  • Rabbit--When the ball takes off at a low, fast trajectory, exhibiting numerous uncatchable bounces.
  • Roller--This is considered a "dead" ball;  i.e. obviously uncatchable.  The Rabbit is actually a Roller, *but **participants THINK they can catch a Rabbit.
  • Dud--A ball that comes to a "dead" stop because it hits a yielding surface--like grass, *clothing,  bodies, etc.

Process: Get the group into a circle.  Creatively choose the first thrower and then sequentially number off the remainder of the participants.  This throw/catch sequence must be maintained throughout the game.  Choose a winning score; 10 points represents an average short game.  First participant to 10 points finishes as numero uno; everyone else automatically ties for second place.  Start again with a new thrower--not the winner.

To begin play, the assigned catcher must call the throw, as per the vocabulary designations attached (see next page).  The thrower honors the catcher's request with as accurate a toss as possible, and aimed toward striking the ground close to the center of the group.  The catcher has the right to call a re-throw before the ball hits the ground if they feel that the throw is unacceptable.

Each time the ball strikes the playing surface one point is scored, IF the catcher eventually catches the ball before it becomes a Roller.  The total number of bounces makes up the score for that throw.  If the ball becomes a Roller or if the ball is missed, no points are scored.  During this zig-zag pursuit, the other participants do their best to stay out of the way.  If a ball does hit a participant by mistake (Dud), that play is over with no score recorded, but one point is subtracted from the hit participant's score.  The winner must win by 2 points.


A Casual:  This requires that the receiver stands from whatever type of throw that they requested, and that they remain casually affixed (both feet must remain planted) until the ball has rebounded two times.  If casual participants move their feet before the second bounce, a point is subtracted from their total score.  Successfully completing a Casual adds two points to whatever regular score is accumulated.

A Rebound:  The receiver requests that the throw be rebounded off a wall.  An extra point is added to the  receiver's regular score in this case.  When playing near walls (in a gym, for example) any inadvertent ball contact with a wall adds a point to the total.

Blind Throw:  The receiver must stand with his eyes closed until the ball has made it's first contact with a  horizontal surface.  Successfully completing a bouncing blind sequence adds one point to the participant's total.  These various "throws" can be combined in an attempt to garner more points.    Combined receptions are usually attempted toward the end of a game when it becomes obvious that you either score big or go out in a blaze of glory.

For example, if a participant asks for a blind, casual, rebounding skyscraper, the thrower delivers a rebounding high throw off a wall (asking for this throw guarantees four points before the ball even hits the floor).  Receivers must keep their eyes closed until the ball has made first floor contact, and then must stay in place until the ball has hit the horizontal playing surface once more.  This is a very difficult shot to play, and if successfully completed the catcher certainly deserves the extra points and wild applause.  The derisive laughter resulting from a spectacular miss is also well received by participants and spectators alike.
