Red Light, Green Light for Climbing Walls

Grade level: K-6

 Equipment:  none

Objective:  To have the students follow directions and maintain balance for a short period of time.

Description:   The direction for this activity are exactly like the age old game of Red Light, Green Light.  When the teacher says "Green Light",  the students are free to traverse across the wall.  As soon as the teacher says "Red Light" the students are to freeze in place where they are.  If anyone moves before the teacher says "Green Light" again, that student is out until the next game begins.  This game is a process of elimination in which there will be only a few students left on the wall in the end.  It is recommended you end the game with about 4 students on the wall so there is a team of winners, rather than just one.

Rules/Safety/Accommodations: Students should follow basic climbing wall rules.

Facilitation/Reflection Questions:

  1. Was it hard to maintain certain positions for a long period of time?  Why or why not?
  2. Was it hard to be honest when you moved after the teacher said Red Light?  Why or why not?
  3. What was your favorite part of this activity?
