Reach New Heights! for Bouldering Walls

Class Climbing Record

Grade level: K-6

Equipment:  none

Objective: To get as many students on the wall at a time.  To attempt to set a new record each time this activity is performed.

Description: The class lines up and the first person mounts the wall.  After this climber is an arm's length away, the second climber mounts the wall.  The mounted climbers continue to traverse down the length of the wall without touching the ground at any time.  After each new climber is an arm's length away from the starting point the next climber may begin.  The first climber may stop on the wall near the end to wait for as many people to get on the wall as possible.  The activity is done when someone touches the ground or when everyone is on the wall!

This is a great activity to talk about how each person's individual effort plays into team success.  Also great to talk about goal setting.  If this is an introductory activity, allow 5 touches and still achieve success.  Adjust this number as you need to for the ability of your students.  As the school year progresses, take away the number of touches allowed.

Rules/Safety/Accommodations: Students should follow basic climbing wall rules.

Facilitation/Reflection Questions:

1. What were some ways that the class worked together?
2. What were some specific actions the group took to achieve their goal?
3. How did it feel to achieve your goal?  To fall a little short of your goal?
4. Complete this sentence: I really enjoyed today’s activity because…
