Partner Climb

Grade level: K-12

Equipment:  5 foot sections of webbing or rope

Objective:  To traverse the wall while tied to a partner.

Description:  Have the class get into groups of 4.  Explain that two people will climb while tied together while the other two spot.  The roles will reverse after each successful traverse.  Tie small loop holes in the ends of the 5 foot sections wide enough for a hand to comfortable slip through.  They do not have to be tight.  Have one climber slip their left hand into one end, and the other climber slip their right hand into the other end.  Have them position themselves so they are facing the wall and their hands that are tied together are between them (see picture).  Have the partners traverse the length of the wall without either partner touching the ground or making an unsafe move.  Spotters can help judge.

Rules/Safety/Accommodations: Students should follow basic climbing wall rules.  Students should also not climb too much higher than their partner.  Good spotting is essential.

Facilitation/Reflection Questions:

  1. What was difficult about climbing while attached to a partner?
  2. In what ways were you able to help your partner?
  3. What was your favorite part of this activity?
