Grade level: 3-12
Equipment: Foam pool Noodles, Wacky Noodle Stoppers (see picture)
Objective: Like traditional timed shuttle activities, to climb out and retrieve noodles and shuttle them back to the beginning.
Description: Determine and order in which the students will climb. When the teacher says GO and starts the stopwatch, the climber traverses to the first Noodle, takes it off the wall and then traverses back to the starting point. Once there, the climber drops the Noodle and then traverses out to the second Noodle. At the second Noodle, the climber retrieves it and traverses back to the beginning. Once there, the climber drops the Noodle and then traverses out to the third Noodle. These steps are repeated until the last Noodle is retrieved and returned to the starting point. The stopwatch is stopped when the last Noodle is dropped.
Rules/Safety/Accommodations: Students should follow basic climbing wall rules.
This activity should be introduced as an individual activity and the times should not be compared from one individual to another. Calculating times up on a wipe board would only indicate those that had the best and worst times. Emphasize to the students that competing against your own times has more long term effects than trying to beat out another student. Celebrate time improvements and have the students challenge themselves to beat their own times.
- How can you benefit from trying to beat your best time?
- Why is pushing yourself to do better a positive attribute?
- What was your favorite part of this activity?
