Hot Potato for Climbing Walls

Grade level: K-6

Equipment:  none

Objective: To increase color awareness and hand/foot placement

Description: Have your participants partner up.  Explain that each person will get a chance in both roles for the activity. Have each person pick out a color of climbing hold that is "hot" that they will not be able to touch as they traverse across the wall.  If you have set routes on your wall have each climber pick a route that they will attempt.  The goal is to try to traverse the entirety of the route without touching the 'hot potatoes' or without stepping off of the wall.  Have the partners start at one end of the wall and traverse to the other end, or until the climber gets too tired to finish.  The partner not climbing should watch for 'hot potato' touches.  Roles reverse after an incorrect touch or a mighty successful finish!

Rules/Safety/Accommodations: Students should follow basic climbing wall rules.

Facilitation/Reflection Questions:

1. Explain why you picked the route and color you did.
2. What were some specific actions you took to be successful?
3. How did it feel to achieve your goal?  To fall a little short of your goal?
