Square Hop

Type of Activity: Problem-Solving

Props Needed: Plastic Squares

Set Up: Set up the Squares in a circle pattern with enough space in between each, so a person can stand on the block comfortably between the others to either side.

Process: Ask individuals to stand behind the squares while the instructions are given.  The object of the activity is to go all the way around the circle of squares, every participant touching each square. Once the activity is started, no one can touch the ground.  If the ground is touched, everyone must start over.  As the group successfully competes each round take one square away.  This increased challenge will get them to rethink their strategy.

Variations: Similar to 'Stump Jump' used in many adventure programs where the “rule” of only one person on a square at a time is reinforced throughout activity. The typical rule of if nothing touching then lose a square is not part of this particular version.

  • How did the group communicate with each other?
  • As the activity progressed what issues or barriers got in the way of success?
  • Did anyone get frustrated in this activity?  Why or why not?
  • How would the way the group worked together in this activity reflect the way we work together on a regular basis?
