Type of Activity: Problem Solving
Props Needed: Various nuts, bolts, and connectors, 2 plastic mats
Set Up: This is a great hand/eye coordination activity. You should have two of each kind of nut/bolt/connector piece in your kit, plus two plastic mats. Separate the like kinds onto each mat, so one piece would go on one mat, the other on the other mat. After doing this you will have two like sets on each mat.
Process: Show the group the exact way you want the pieces to be assembled. After showing them, keep one set for yourself and cover it or remove it from sight of the group. Then disassemble all of their pieces and set them beside the mat. Instruct the group that you will time them to see how long it takes them to reassemble the pieces exactly the way they were. There will be a 10 second penalty for each piece that is not assembled correctly. Let them try this as many times as you tell them. Between 4-5 times is adequate. Their first try will be their baseline time. Keep track of their times on your Dry Erase Board. Ultimately, this is a continuous improvement activity and you are trying to teach them how to set realistic and healthy goals towards their achievement.
- How did the group communicate during this activity?
- How did you support each other?
