Training Wheels Games

Type of Activity: Energizer

Props Needed: None

Set Up: No special space requirements. Works well with 4 to 25 participants for 12 to 20 minutes.

Process: This is a nice one to warm-up the muscles. Split your large group into smaller groups of 4 to 5 participants. Give all the groups a number, lets say 11 (but please choose a number that works for you. Each group will then work independently to try and attain that number. They do this by counting to 3 together, on 3 each participant presents (shoots) a number of (from 0 to 5) fingers (using only one hand of course) out into the center of his or her group. The fingers out (we’ll count the thumb as a finger too) within the small group are counted. If they add up to 11 that group is allowed to stop the action and watch the other groups get to their number. If the fingers do not add up to 11, let’s say it’s 9, the small group must jump up and down together 9 times (some groups do this with arms around each others shoulders). After jumping they count off to 3 again for another shoot of fingers. The added challenge to this activity is that you ask the groups not to do any planning that might “add” to their success.

Variations: After a few groups have attained their number and are watching the action, call, “Mingle!” – learned in The Chicken Game. When this is called participants walk around and shake hands with other participants exchanging pleasantries like names, how’s it goings and the like. Then the facilitator calls a out a group size, like 4 to 5 or 5 to 6 participants. Participants get into new small groups of that size. When everyone is in a group call out a number the groups can “shoot” for and jump around. Another idea if you have a drawing board of some sort (if props are around, why not?). Write out a series of numbers on the board that each group could attain. Give a time limit to see how far each group can get through the series of numbers before time runs out – again, without any planning.
